Large-scale training are being conducted in “Academician Zarifa Aliyeva” ferry vessel

Maritime Safety Service and an external audit conducted large-scale training on the ASCO-owned “Academician Zarifa Aliyeva” ferry vessel. The training covered 3 areas: general alarm, fire alarm and abandonment of the vessel.

General ship alarm. A general ship alarm signal is given for the crew to gather at an emergecy assembly point, when an accident has happened. At that moment, the crew should wait at the assembly point for clarification of the situation and subsequent instructions. It is mandatory for the crew to gather in life jackets and with other necessary accessories. The chief assistant reports to the ship’s captain after checking list of the crew on the board.  It is very important in order to rescue victims, if neccessary.

Fire alarm. In case of fire (regardless of scale) in any part of the vessel, a fire alarm is immediately given At this point, the intelligence group begins its work. Two intelligence units are being formed: one is responsible for the deck, the other for the engine room.

These groups consist of specialist trained in the specific part of the vessel. The head of the fire fighting team is the second assistant captain. He is in constant contact with the main command post (MCP), reports on the readiness of the group and makes sure that the group arrives in the proper equipment. The group is sent for exploration only upon the confirmation of the captain. During its shift, the group reports information from the fire site to the 2nd assistant, and the 2nd assistant reports to the MCP. As a result, the 2nd assistant transmits instructions from the MCP to the group and ensures that the explorers fully understand them.

Vessel abandonment signal. This is a signal that only the captain can give if there is a danger of sinking incident, when it is impossible to fight fire or in other dangers when there is no other way out. At this situation, according to the captain’s instructions, the lifeboat or liferaft (often both life-saving appliances) is prepared for the crew to be evacuated from the vessel and launched into the water. Crew members take their places in these rescue boats according to their numbers in the table.

It is noteworthy, that such trainings are conducted on the board of ASCO vessels belonging to both the Transportation Fleet and the Offshore Fleet. As a result of trainings conducted under the supervision of Chairman of ASCO Mr. Rauf Valiyev, the preparation of crew for various situations is increasing. In turn, such preparation determines the safe transportation of cargos and passengers, the performance of all operations in accordance with safety rules. Thus, ASCO is turning into a more reliable partner in the region.
